A Method for Inhibiting Dual‑species Biofilm of Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans; A Strain of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum with Anti‑caries Efficacy.
Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CCFM8724, when administered at different time points, can reduce dual‑species biofilm mass, water‑insoluble exopolysaccharide production and biofilm activity. It not only significantly inhibits the adhesion of initial biofilm, but also exerts favorable inhibitory effects on 24‑hour mature biofilm. After co‑culture of the lactobacillus with pathogenic bacteria, the biofilm structure becomes obviously loose and sparse, with no hyphae of Candida albicans or verrucous biofilm observed. It delivers significant disruption to biofilm matrix and structure. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CCFM8724 exhibits strong inhibitory effect against dual‑species biofilm formed by Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans in tests. It can markedly inhibit oral pathogenic bacteria and freshen breath.
